It is possible that Harvey Jones, a prisoner, will win a Presidential Teaching Award. Jones is in prison for life in Texas for killing two people during a robbery. How could this person win a prize

for teaching? The reason is that in prison Jones changed his ways. He now teaches other prisoners how to read and write.
In 1979, Jones created a motorcycle gang called “The Snake Heads”. His gang committed many crimes, at first breaking into people’s homes and businesses. Then, one day, while robbing a gas station, Jones killed two people. The police caught Jones and arrested him, and in 1982 a jury decided Jones was guilty of murder. He was sent to prison for life. For the next 10 years, Jones beat up other prisoners and fought with prison guards. Then, one day in 1992, Jones finally asked himself: “Am I a man or an animal?” He decided to try to live life differently. He apologized to the families of his victims. He began to read many books and studied to become a teacher. In 1995, he opened a small classroom for other prisoners. Many of the other prisoners had very little education. He helped them to improve their ability to read and write, and some prisoners even completed a high school equivalency degree. Many of his students left prison and were able to find jobs. Speaking about the classes, Jones says: “I damaged the community so much. I wanted to do something restorative. This is my life’s work”.
Now, many people think Jones should be set free. They think he is a better person now and doesn’t need to stay in prison. Other people disagree. “He killed two people,” says Janet Effrin, a police officer. “I don’t care if he says he’s a teacher now.”
