Agriculture
Agriculture consists of a set of primary activities, being directly associated with the cultivation of plants (agriculture) and the creation of animals (livestock) for human consumption or for the supply of raw materials in the manufacture of clothing, medicines, biofuels, products of beauty, among others. This segment of the economy is one of the elements that make up the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a given place.
This activity has been carried out for thousands of years, being of fundamental importance for human survival, because it is through it that food is obtained. The development of techniques has provided (and still provides) many transformations in the structure of agriculture and livestock, a notorious fact when we analyze the evolution of methods of cultivation and animal husbandry over the years.
Despite technological developments, many properties continue to use traditional methods of cultivation and raising livestock, especially in underdeveloped countries, where there is little investment in the mechanization of rural activities. In this sense, a classification of agricultural systems emerged: extensive system, labor intensive system and intensive system.
- Extensive system: characterized by the absence of technology and low productivity. This system is practiced by farmers who use burning as a form of soil preparation and family labor. Livestock is developed in large areas, where the herd is loose in the pasture and looks for its own food.
- Labor intensive system: practiced in underdeveloped regions, this system has characteristics similar to the extensive system (little or no mechanization, there is no selection of seeds, traditional methods of cultivation and grazing, etc.). However, this system uses many workers, and is not limited to family labor.
- Intensive system: highly mechanized, adaptation of the soil for certain planting, seed processing, use of fertilizers, agricultural implements, confinement of the herd, among other elements that contribute to intensify the productivity and profitability of the owners. It requires little manpower and a lot of technological apparatus. This system is practiced, mainly, in developed regions.
