Brazilian School Kid Finds Mars Mystery
In 2001, at the age of 12, Iuri Jasper became the first Brazilian student to take part in a mission to Mars.
He was a member of the Red Rover Goes to Mars project. There were eight other kids on the team: Zsofia Bodo, 16, and Bernadett Gaal, 14, from Hungary; Shaleen Harlalka, 15, Vikas Sarangadhara, 10, and Tanmay khirwadkar, 13, from India; Kimberly deRose,14, from the USA; Hsin-Liu Kao, 11, from Taiwan; and Wojciech Lukasik, 10, from Poland.
There were over ten thousand candidates from forty-four nations. At the end, there were 80 semi-finalists. The nine winners went to Pasadena, California, to participate in the Red Rover Goes to Mars project.
There was a camera in the NASA Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). The nine kids were the first students to take pictures with a remote controlled camera that was aboard the spacecraft.
One of the pictures showed something new about the planet’s surface. There was a surprising group of dark-colored rocks in the middle of a light-colored terrain.
The kids were really happy. For them it was all a big adventure. But for the scientists it was very puzzling. How did the rocks get there? What geological history do they represent on the Red Planet? These are some of the questions scientists are still asking themselves.
Ron Greeley of Arizona State University, for example, was very excited with their discovery. He said, “For me, this is not an adventure. It is pure scientific investigation.”
