In 1930, Ambedkar inaugurated the Kalaram Temple Movement, so that the Dalits had the right to enter the temple. It was a non-violent movement for which he had been preparing for 3 months. Nearly 15,000 volunteers gathered at the Kalaram Temple satyagraha, making it one of the largest processions in the city of Nashik (also in the state of Maharashtra). The procession was guided by a military band, a group of scouts, and women and men who walked in order to see the statues of the gods of the Kalaram Temple for the first time. When they arrived at the gates, they had been closed by Brahmin authorities. The movement sought dignity and self-respect.
