The past continuous is used to refer to a situation that was in progress at a given time in the past. The continuous construction of the second last to be given the form:
Subject + verb "to be" in the past (was / Were) + verb with "ing" + complement.
She was working yesterday night. (It was working last night). He was working at the college. (He was working at the university). The dog was barking a lot yesterday night. (The dog was barking a lot last night).
For a negative, just add the "not" after the past of the verb "to be" (was / Were):
They Were not studying when i arrived home. (They were not studying when I got home). I was not traveling last week. (I was not traveling last week). We were not playing cards During the class. (We were not playing cards during class).
