THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
INTRODUCTION
in the outside world, it's different. You're free, you see other boys and girls, and you can play sport and do a lot of different
things. But here you see each other every hour of the day. Be careful Anne, and don't take it too seriously
Anne Fran's father says this to his 13-year-old daughter. Anne has told him about her feelings for a boy called Peter, and in some
ways, this is not different from the advice that fathers always give teenage daughters. But what does he mean by 'the outside
world'?
Although Anne is an ordinary teenage girl, she does not have an ordinary life. Anne is living in Holland during the Secon
World War. She and her family are hiding on the top floor of a building in Amsterdam. They are hiding from Germans, who have
invaded Holland. The Franks are a Jewish family, and the Germans are arresting Jews and sending them away to die.
In Germany at that time, Adolf Hitler had led the Nazi Party to power in 1933. After this, life became very different for Jews in
Germany. Very soon they were not allowed to do many kinds of jobs, or own property. Later their homes and businesses were
attacked and burned. On one violent night in November 1938, thousands of Jewish buildings were destroyed, and 30,000 Jews
were arrested. They were then sent away to concentration camps. These were large prisions where people had to work in
terrible conditions, and many died or were killed.
