"footprints in the sand"

One night I had a dream…

I dreamed that I was walking along the beach with the Lord and, in the firmament, scenes from my life were playing.

For each scene that passed, I noticed that there were two pairs of footprints in the sand: one was mine and the other was the Lord.

As the last scene of my life passed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand and noticed that many times, in my life's path, there were only a couple of footprints in the sand.

I also noticed that this happened in the most difficult and anguished moments of my life. This really upset me and I asked the Lord:

– Lord, You told me that, once I decided to follow You, You would always walk with me, in all ways. However, I noticed that during the greatest tribulations of my life, there were only a couple of footprints in the sand. I don't understand why, in the hours when I needed You the most, You left me alone.

The Lord answered me:

- My dear son. I would never leave you in times of trial and suffering. When you saw, in the sand, only a couple of footprints, they were mine. That's exactly where I picked you up.

Uma noite eu tive um sonho…

Sonhei que andava a passear na praia com o Senhor e, no firmamento, passavam cenas da minha vida.

Por cada cena que passava, percebi que ficavam dois pares de pegadas na areia: um era o meu e o outro era do Senhor.

Quando a última cena da minha vida passou diante de nós, olhei para trás, para as pegadas na areia, e notei que muitas vezes, no caminho da minha vida, havia apenas um par de pegadas na areia.

Notei também que isso aconteceu nos momentos mais difíceis e angustiosos do meu viver. Isso me aborreceu deveras e perguntei então ao Senhor:

– Senhor, Tu disseste-me que, uma vez que resolvi seguir-Te, Tu andarias sempre comigo, em todos os caminhos. Contudo, notei que durante as maiores atribulações do meu viver, havia apenas um par de pegadas na areia. Não compreendo porque é que, nas horas em que eu mais necessitava de Ti, Tu me deixaste sozinho.

O Senhor respondeu-me:

– Meu querido filho. Jamais te deixaria nas horas da prova e do sofrimento. Quando viste, na areia, apenas um par de pegadas, eram as minhas. Foi exatamente aí que eu peguei em ti ao colo.
