O TEXTO
YOUR BRAIN IN LOVE
What happens when we fall in love is probably one of the most difficult things in the whole universe to explain. When we are in love, we can trick ourselves into thinking the other person is perfect. Of course, no one is really perfect.
Research has shown that love affects the brain in many ways and in a number of areas. When you fall in love, the right side of your brain gets very busy. The right side is the bit that seems to be especially important for our emotions.
Love releases certain chemical in our brain. Levels of the stress hormone cortisol increase during the initial phase of romantic love. As cortisol levels rise, levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin become depleted. Low levels of serotonin precipitate the obsessive-compulsive behaviors associated with infatuation. Another is dopamine, and this gives us a feeling of excitement. Dopamine activates the reward circuit, helping to make love a pleasurable experience similar to the euphoria associated with use of cocaine or alcohol. Another is called oxytocin and seems to be responsible for the light-headedness cosiness we feel when we are with the person we love.
When these are released in large quantities, they go to the parts of the brain that are especially responsive to them.
