Reading: Television and the Communications Revolution
Television has broken down class and regional boundaries to a greater extent than other media.
Books and newspapers are segregated by área and readrship. Only the well-educated can read serious books. Radio begins to break down this segregation of knowledge. Television goes much further. It seeks the lowest common denominator and finds it.
Americans as a group are introduced to the same themes in the same way. Docudramas, as well as the evening News, are watched by millions of Americans of all educational and social backgrounds; they see the same pictures and receive the same information.
The stars of television – from rock performs to politicians – have become as intimate as old friends.
Television has contributed to change the values and perceptions of Americans. It has enabled Americans to feel at home in New York or in Dallas.
It has homogenized American culture and nationalized it.
