Uma frase é direta, se estiver escrita assim:
Sujeito - Verbo - Complemento.
Uma frase é indireta, quando apresentar qualquer variação da ordem apresentada anteriormente:
Sujeito - Complemento - Verbo;
Complemento - Verbo - Sujeito;
Complemento - Sujeito - Verbo;
Verbo - Sujeito - Complemento;
Verbo - Complemento - Sujeito.

Henry said( that) he had slept only a few hours the night before.
Anna called me from New York and said: " It's very cold here."(direto)
Anna called me from New York and said( that) it was very cold there.
