Charlotte Cooper Sterry - 22 September 1870 – 10 October 1966- was an English female tennis player who won five singles titles at the Wimbledon Championships and in 1900 became Olympic champion. In winning in Paris on 11 July 1900, she became the first female Olympic tennis champion as well as the first individual female Olympic champion.
Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova - Russian - born 6 March 1937) is a member of the Russian State Duma, engineer, and former cosmonaut.
She is the first and youngest woman to have flown in space with a solo
mission on the Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963. She orbited the Earth 48 times,
spent almost three days in space, and reains the only woman to have
been on a solo space mission.
Dandara dos Palmares was an Afro-Brazilian warrior of the colonial period of Brazil and was part of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a settlement of Afro-Brazilian people who freed themselves from enslavement, in the
present-day state of Alagoas, Brazil.[1] After being arrested on February 6, 1694, she committed suicide, refusing to return to a life of slavery. She is a mysterious figure today, because not much is known about her life. Most of the stories about her are varied and disconnected.[2]. She and her husband Zumbi dos Palmares, the last king of the Quilombo dos Palmares, had three children.
Francisca Edwiges Neves Gonzaga, better known as Chiquinha Gonzaga was born on Oct 17, 1847, Rio de Janeiro – and died on February 28, 1935, Rio de Janeiro. She was a Brazilian composer, pianist and the first woman conductor in Brazil.[1] Chiquinha Gonzaga was the first pianist of "choro" and author of the first carnival march, "Ó Abre Alas "(1899). Her plays and operettas, such as Forrobodó and Jurití, were a great success with the public because they used elements of Brazilian popular culture of the time. In the Passeio Público of Rio de Janeiro, there is a herm in her honor by the sculptor Honorius Peçanha. In May 2012, law 12624 was enacted establishing the National Day of Brazilian Popular Music, celebrated on the day of her birthday, October 17.
Marie Skłodowska Curie - 7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934, was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields. She was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris,[4] and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.[5]
Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro da Silva, best known as Anita Garibaldi, August 30, 1821 – August 4, 1849, was the Brazilian wife and comrade-in-arms of Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. Their partnership epitomized the spirit of the 19th century's Age of Romanticism and revolutionary liberalism. She participated in the Farroupilha Revolution (1835-1845). A skilled horsewoman, Anita is said to have taught Giuseppe about the gaucho culture of the plains of southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. One of Garibaldi's comrades described Anita as "an amalgam of two elemental forces…the strength and courage of a man and the charm and tenderness of a woman, manifested by the daring and vigor with which she had brandished her sword and the beautiful oval of her face that trimmed the softness of her extraordinary eyes."
Queen Nzingha (1583-1663) was a 17th-century queen of the Ndongo and Matamba Kingdoms of the Mbundu people in what is known as Angola today.[1] Born into the ruling family of Ndongo, Nzinga demonstrated an aptitude for defusing political crises in her capacity as ambassador to the Portuguese, and later assumed power over the kingdoms after the death of her brother. She ruled during a period of rapid growth in the African slave trade. Her reign lasted 37 years.
Nzinga fought for the freedom and stature of her kingdoms against the Portuguese,[1] who were concentrating their efforts towards South West Africa, in attempts to control the slave trade.[2] Today, she is remembered in Angola for her intelligence, her political and diplomatic wisdom, as well as her brilliant military tactics. A major street in Luanda is named after her, and in 2002 a statue of her in Largo do Kinaxixi, Luanda, Angola was dedicated by then-President Santos to cel
