O passado do verbo to be nada mais é do que o uso do passado simples, que é um tempo verbal que fala sobre uma ação que ocorreu no passado e não ocorre mais no presente da fala proferida, mas com o verbo to be sendo usado em suas duas formas nesse tempo verbal, que são elas o was e o were.
