BONES

Pictures in books, paintings and laboratory skeletons give us an idea of the aspect of our bones,
according to which a bone is a solid, hard, and white material. How wrong!
The only people whose bones are solid, dry, brittle, and white are dead people. Bones are blood-soaked
living tissues which are extremely porous and pulsating. They are soft, relatively lightweight, and actually
have a spongelike interior. In fact, solid bones would have a tremendous weight and we would have great
difficulty to move.
Human bone is made up of four distinct layers. The center is a core of marrow where white blood cells
are produced. Next is a fairly large area of thick, spongy, and very porous bonelike material which is full of
blood vessels and cells. This layer is surrounded by a wall of hard, calcified material. It is this hard layer that
conforms to our popular image of bone. Finally, a thin layer of skinlike tissue covers the bone. Bones are not
white either, but actually range in color from beige to light brown. The white, sterile skeleton bones seen in
display have been carefully boiled and cleaned. In fact, the word skeleton comes from the Greek word that
means "dried up".
