FESTEJOS DE ORIGEM RELIGIOSA EM MINAS GERAIS
“The festivities, also called folklore, are ritualistic manifestations and represent the
feelings and faith of a people. Some celebrations have an Afro-Brazilian origin, like the
Congado and the Folia de Reis, and they recall the link with the deities that originated in
the African matrix religions, the belonging and ancestry of black peoples.
Below, we describe some of the festivities:
Congado: The celebration has its origins tied to the Parades in thanksgiving to the
Congos Kings in Africa. In Minas Gerais, incorporating elements of Catholicism, such as
devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, Saint Benedict and Saint Efigenia.
Folia de Reis: Declared Immaterial Cultural Patrimony of Minas Gerais, takes place
from December 24 to January 6. The figure of the ambassador asks permission to enter
the houses, pronounces the prophecies and recalls the words written by the prophets
about the birth of Christ. There are instrumentalists, singers and representations of the
Three Wise Men.
Pastorinhas: These are groups of girls and young women who visit the cribs of the
houses, remembering the shepherds in Belém. They dress like peasants, dance and
sing the message in praise. They ask for a contribution for the Christmas of the needy
children of the town.
Festa do Divino: It occurs on the date consecrated to the Divine Holy Spirit. In Minas
Gerais, it is also called the Feast of the Empire, because during its realization an
emperor is elected, who will be the party or honored at the next party. The tradition of
the feast was brought to Brazil by the Portuguese, acquiring specific characteristics,
through the syncretism with the religions of African matrixes".
