The objective of this work is to analyze the process of construction and effective citizenship in Brazil. The idea of citizenship has several aspects to be understood, and based on the idea of citizenship as a set of rights that allow the individual to participate in public life and in decision-making, the work begins with a historical analysis of the acquisition process. rights by Brazilian society, detailing important facts for our democratic achievements. Then, based on the meaning of citizenship as participation, we analyze the mechanisms for exercising participatory citizenship, found in our current legal system and with pillars in the Federal Constitution of 1988.
