Emest Hemingway (1898-1961), na internationally famous
American writer, was born in Illinois. In 1917, after finishing high
school, he began to work as a repórter. Rejected for army servisse in
World War I because of his poor vision, he voluntereed as a driver of
na American ambulance in France. From there, he was transferred to
the Italian front where he wa wounded in a explosion. After the war, he
returned to Paris where he wrote most of his work.
Hemingway's style of writing is striking. He uses short
sentences and simple bust intense vocabular. The main themes of his
novels are war, as in Farewell to Arms bullfighting, as in Death in the
Afternoon, hunting, as in Green Hills of Africa and fishing, as in The
Old Man and the Sea. This last novel portrays na old fisherman,
Santiago, who is triumphant even in defeat.
