) The differences between the Ancient and Modern Olympic Games
) Women's long fight for equality at the Olympic Games
) The dominance of women in sports events
Only male athletes competed in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women could not
participate, but they could enter their horses in the equestrian events. If their horses won,
as the owners of the horses they got credited with the victory.
In the first editions of the modern Olympics, things didn't change for women. In Athens

inclusion of women would be "impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic, and incorrect."

tennis and golf. English tennis player Charlotte Cooper became the first woman to win an
Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. But earlier in the same Olympics, women
competed in croquet and sailing. Swiss sailor Hélène de Pourtalès actually won a gold
medal as part of her sailing team before Cooper.

The Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984 included women's shooting events.

Only in 2012, with the inclusion of women's boxing, women could participate in all sports
events. And there are two sports in which only women can participate: synchronized
swimming and rhythmic gymnastics.
