The film had already started when we got to the cinema.

past negative = sujeito + hadn't + passado do verbo
I hadn't heard you knocking the door because I was sleeping.
(Não ouvi você bater na porta porque estava dormindo.)

past interrogative = had + sujeito + passado do verbo 
Had she read the book before seeing the movie?
(Ela tinha lido o livro antes de assistir ao filme?)
