O to be (was/were) e o did são auxiliares do presente simples ou simple present. Para responder essa questão, precisamos olhar para os verbos e pronomes para podermos saber qual vamos usar.
O verbo to be born, que é nascer, necessita do to be. Então, sabendo disso, nós olhamos para o sujeito da frase. Se for I, He, She, It, será was. Exemplo: your mother (she) was born. Se for We, You, They, será were. Exemplo: you were born.
Outra ocasião em que precisamos do to be é quando perguntamos "o quê?", com o what, ou "quem?", com o who. Exemplo: who was your first teacher (he/she)? → Quem foi sua primeira professora/professor?
