I   - There was  a bank near my house five years ago.

II  - There weren't many students at the theatre play, just a few.

III - There were some people wainting for you at the door.​

Na frase I

There was    >>>>> singular

Na frase II

There weren't  >>>> plural negativa

Não havia muitos alunos na peça de teatro, só um pouco.

Na frase III

um ponto de interrogação no fim da frase. Mas não se usa ''some'' nesse tipo de frase interrogativa. Então, acho que houve um erro de digitação.

⇒⇒  There was - simple past - singular  (havia)

There was a dog here.

There was not a dog here.   (was not = wasn't)

⇒⇒  There were - simple past - plural  

There were many people around.

There were not many people around. (were not = weren't)
