Modo comparativo

Para formar corretamente os "adjectives in the parentheses either in the comparative or superlative degree" iremos utilizar as normas do modo comparativo e do modo superlativo.

Para formar adjetivos comparativos em inglês deve-se atentar ao número de sílabas que o adjetivo contém:

  • Adjetivos com uma sílaba: basta adicionar o ER ao final. Caso o adjetivo termine em C+V+C (C=consoante; V=vogal), a consoante final deve ser duplicada antes do ER;
  • Adjetivos com duas sílabas: pode ocorrer adição do ER ou a inclusão do termo MORE antes do adjetivo. Em grande parte dos casos as duas opções são aceitas, e em caso de dúvida, sugere-se o uso do MORE. Para adjetivos terminados em Y é necessário incluir o I antes do ER.
  • Adjetivos com três ou mais sílabas: basta adicionar o termo MORE antes do adjetivo para formar o comparativo.

Modo superlativo

O superlativo em língua inglesa é utilizado para estabelecer o mais alto grau de alguma qualidade. Por exemplo: O melhor, O maior, O mais alto, etc.

A forma superlativa é usada apresentando superioridades e inferioridades em geral.

  • Para formar o superlativo, geralmente se adiciona o The antes do adjetivo, e o EST ao final.
  • Existem outras formas irregulares, como Best (better), por exemplo.
  • Outra opção é a forma: The most ... (adjetivo).
