One day, the stepmother, who was bad, has the idea of ​​abandoning the children in the middle of the forest, because that would be two fewer mouths to feed. The woman manages to convince her husband, and the next morning, everyone leaves to cut wood.

Thus, the children's father lights a fire in the woods and leaves them there, saying that he would be back soon, which is not the case.
João, who had heard the evil plan, had prepared himself and carried with him shiny stones that he had found in the house. Along the way, the boy left the pebbles on the floor, so that he and his sister could return to the house following these stones.

In this way, João and Maria managed to return home, which made their father very happy. However, the stepmother became possessed and convinced her husband to abandon her children in a place even further away. This time, the woman locked the door to the children's room, not allowing João to pick up the shiny stones.
Again, the next morning, they head towards the forest. João and Maria had each received a piece of bread and had the idea of ​​leaving crumbs.

The old woman, who was actually a witch, offers a lot of food to them, who stay at her house for several days. Then, the witch decides to arrest João in a cage and feed him until he is very fat to be roasted in the oven.

João managed to deceive the witch, who thought he was not fat enough, but even so, one day she decides to bake him anyway.
The witch then orders Maria to light the oven and when the old woman gets close to the oven, Maria pushes her inside and quickly closes the lid.

The girl manages to free her brother, and the two run out of there, not without first getting riches that were in the old woman's house.

Then the children wander through the forest for a few more days and manage to return home. This time, the father receives them and no longer lets his stepmother do evil.

A bruxa então manda Maria acender o forno e quando a velha chega perto do forno, Maria a empurra para dentro e fecha a tampa rapidamente.A menina consegue libertar o irmão, e os dois saem correndo dali, não sem antes conseguirem as riquezas que estavam na casa da velha.
