History of England

- The territory of present-day England has been inhabited by the Celtic people since the mid-5th century BC.

 

- Between the years of 43 to 410 occurred the Roman occupation. The province of England was administered by the Romans in this period.

 

- In the fifth century occurred the invasion of the Roman Empire by the barbarians. The region of England was invaded and dominated, mainly, by three germanic towns: Jutes, Anglos and Saxons. These Germanic peoples expelled much of the Celts and Romans who inhabited the region.

 

- In the tenth century the region was strongly attacked by the Vikings, but resisted and strengthened.

 

- In the year 1066, William the Conqueror, defeated the Saxon king Harold in the Battle of Hastings and was crowned king. The process of unification and formation of England begins.

 

- The end of the twelfth century was marked by great political instability. King Richard, Lionheart, went to participate in the Third Crusade and captured, became a prisoner of the Duke of Austria. In this period the English nobility gained great power in the kingdom.

 

- In 1256, the first Parliament was formed with the participation of ordinary citizens.

- In 1689, the English Parliament created the Bill of Rights, a document that submitted the king to Parliament's power.

 

- In 1707 Scotland was annexed by England. The Act of Union of 1707 put an end to the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).

 

- In the eighteenth century England (already a member of the United Kingdom) underwent a major and important process of transformation in the modes of production, seeking the use of technology to accelerate the manufacture of products and reduce costs. This process became known as the Industrial Revolution.

 

- Driven by the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century, England became one of the great world powers in leading the process of neocolonialism. During this period there was a great enrichment of the country when exploring regions of Africa and Asia. It was the period of formation of the great British Empire.

 

- In the twentieth century, England actively participated in the two great world wars. In World War II was the main military force to face the Nazi forces of Germany, being decisive in the resistance and later victory of the allies.
