Abstract: Despite the advances made by many churches in the social area, Christians cannot ignore the social challenge of understanding biblical teaching, the example of Christ and the lessons of history, as well as the whole bibliographic, legal and doctrinal apparatus regarding the subject matter. The purpose was to reflect on the social role and responsibility of evangelical churches, and whether they are a legal duty or a biblical commandment; in addition to drawing a parallel with the integral mission that the church plays in society and the position of Jurisprudence and doctrine in Brazil regarding the tax immunity to religious temples. A descriptive and qualitative bibliographical and internet research was carried out, gathering information on the role and social responsibility of Brazilian evangelical churches. From the performed analyzes, it was concluded that the social responsibility of the churches is a biblical commandment, but it is also a legal duty, because the motives that led legislators to grant tax immunities to the temples are that the beneficiaries of such tax exemptions will have to jointly promote activities of interest to society as a whole, not only its members, in a comprehensive way.
