“The public is hardly aware that Van Gogh created a series of paintings of sunflowers,” says Leo Jansen, a curator at the Van Gogh Museum and editor of the artist’s letters. “For nine out of10 people I tell, it’s news.” “A lot of people know one of the Sunflowers, and don’t even reali- se there was a series,” agrees Martin Bailey, whose book The Sunflowers Are Mine: The Story of Van Gogh’s Masterpiece waspublished in 2013.

Van Gogh painted sunflowers for the first time in the summer of 1886. Two years later, his interest re-emerged after he settled at Arles, just north of Marseille in Provence. Having in- vited the Post Impressionist French artist Paul Gauguin, whom he admired, to join his Stu- dio of the South, he  began painting sunflowers to brighten up the whitewashed interiors of the yellow house he was renting at 2 Place Lamartine, not far from the town’s railway station and brothels.

"O público mal sabe que Van Gogh criou uma série de pinturas de girassóis", diz Leo Jansen, curador do  Museu Van Gogh e editor das cartas do artista. "Para nove entre 10 pessoas, eu digo, são novidades." "Muitas  pessoas conhecem um dos girassóis e nem percebem que houve uma série", concorda Martin Bailey, cujo livro  Os girassóis são meus: a história da obra-prima de Van Gogh foi publicada em 2013.  

Van Gogh pintou girassóis pela primeira vez no verão de 1886. Dois anos depois, seu interesse ressurgiu  depois que ele se estabeleceu em Arles, ao norte de Marselha, na Provença. Tendo convidado o artista francês  pós-impressionista Paul Gauguin, a quem ele admirava, para ingressar no seu Estúdio do Sul, ele começou a  pintar girassóis para iluminar o interior caiado de branco da casa amarela que ele estava alugando na 2 Place  Lamartine, não longe da estação ferroviária e dos bordéis da cidade.
