There is e there are são traduzidos como existe/há e existem. "There is" é usado, portanto, antes de palavra no singular, que mostre apenas uma quantidade. E "there are" é usado antes de palavra no plural, que indique mais de uma quantidade.

Em inglês temos ainda os substantivos contáveis (countable nouns) e os não contáveis (uncountable noums).
