O verbo principal regular é formado pelo sufixo -ed. Para os outros tempos verbais que façam uso do particípio passado, as regras são as mesmas:
Walk – walked (andar)
Watch – watched (assistir)
Help – helped (ajudar)
Em alguns casos, existem algumas regras ortográficas:
Se o verbo termina em consoante -y. Retira-se o -y e acrescenta-se -ied:
Study – studied (estudar)
Try – tried (tentar)
Se o verbo termina em -e, acrescenta-se apenas -d:
Live – lived (viver)
Like – liked (gostar)
Nos verbos que possuem a sílaba final tônica (de uma a duas sílabas) e são terminados em consoante + vogal + consoante (CVC), dobra-se a última consoante e acrescenta-se -ed:
Drop – dropped (tirar)
Stop – stopped (parar)
Prefer – preferred (preferir)
