Martin Luther King (1929-1968) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, on January 15, 1929. Son and grandson of pastors of the Baptist Church decided to follow the same path. In 1951 he graduated in Theology from Boston University. Became a pastor in 1954, Martin Luther King took up the position of pastor at a church in the city of Montgomery, Alabama.
As a young man, Martin Luther King became aware of the social and racial segregation in which his country's black people lived, especially in the southern states. In 1955, he began his fight for the recognition of the civil rights of black Americans, with peaceful methods, inspired by the figure of Manhattan Gandhi and the theory of civil disobedience of Henry David Thoreau, the same sources that inspired Nelson Mandela's fight against Apartheid in South Africa. The struggle continued. In 1965, Martin Luther King led a demonstration of thousands of civil rights advocates from Selma to Montgomery. But his fight had a tragic ending when his life was interrupted by a shot while resting on the balcony of a Memphis hotel, where he supported a strike movement by the garbage collectors.
Martin Luther King died in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, on April 4, 1968. In 1977, in posthumous honor, represented by his wife Coretta Scott King, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2004 he received the Gold Medal of the US Congress for the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the landmark Civil Rights Act.
