I am writing in reply to your question about putting permanent limitations to the practice of dangerous sports. While I completely agree that our tax money should not be wasted on rescuing seemingly reckless people, I cannot abide to the prohibition of extreme sports. By banning such activity we would be doing more harm than good to our own personal choices.
It is true that over the last decades the number of participants in dangerous competitions has increased and casualties have, unfortunately, taken place. But that fact alone has led to some positive outcomes. Firstly, general awareness to the issue has been raised and, as a consequence, laws and regulations over the matter have been created. There is enough evidence that safety is a true concern of those who engage these extreme sports, like the increasing safety gear requirements, the age and health restrictions.
Nevertheless, we cannot foresee fatality. As a solution to the expenditures of an accident or rescue, the adventurers could form a fund of local or national proportions to meet the costs of rescues and life insurance. That way, some private rescue companies could be standing by in the case of an emergency and our tax money would not be wasted
Last but certainly not least, there is the concern about our freedoms. Downright prohibition resembles an authoritarian stance, which seeks the easy way out of the problem. Road accidents and fatalities in non-dangerous sports happen to this day, and yet, a ban on them would be considered absurd. Before banning an activity, we, as a society, should exhaust all possibilities of dealing with its relevant issues.
To sum it up, I do not minimize the death risk involved in these sports, but simply banning them seems too heavy a decision. What we must do is make sure that everyone taking part in these activities is aware of its hazards and is willing to contribute financially to a mutual help and rescue fund. After that, it would be, ultimately, their choice – which is something we must always have.
