Son and grandson of farmers, José Saramago was born in a lower case village called Azinhaga, at the Ribaltejo Province, on November 16 th in 1922. His parents moved out to Lisbon when he was about to turn 2 years old.

He did his elementar school studies which, due to economic difficulties, could not continue. His first job was as a mechanical locksmith, having then worked in several professions: draftsman, health na social security oficial, translator, editor, journalist.

He published his first book, a novel, Terra do Pecado, in 1947, having been after a long time without publishing house, where he worked as literary diretor and production manager. He collaborated as literary critic in Serra Nova magazine.

He belonged to the first Directorate of the Portuguese Association of Writers na was, from 1985 to 1994, presidente of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Society of Authors. Between April and November of 1975 was assistant direct of the newpaper Diário de Notícias. From 1976 he began to live exclusively from his literary work, first as translator, then as na author. He married Pilar del Rio in 1998, and i February 1993, decided to share his time between his usual residence in Lisbom and Lanzarote island in the Canaries archipelado(Spain). In 1998 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
