Verbo to be no Simple Past Nós vimos na lição passada o verbo to be no passado (Simple Past) – veja o quadro no seu caderno. Segue alguns exemplos para verificar como usamos o verbo to be no simple past nas formas: afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa: EX: Peter was a doctor (afirmativa) - Peter was not a doctor (negativa) - Was Peter a doctor?) Podemos usar forma contraída do verbo to be, na negativa, no Simple Past. Veja como fica: Was not = wasn´t were not = weren´t There to be no Simple Past Como já vimos o verbo There to be no inglês, tem como principal significado ‘existir’, ‘haver’ ou ‘ter’ (na língua portuguesa). No presente usamos “There is” (singular) e “There are” (plural). No passado usamos “There was” (singular) e “There were” (plural). Veja os exemplos: There was a book inside your bag (Havia um livro dentro da sua mala) - singular There were two dogs in the living room (Havia dois cachorros na sala de estar) - plural Copie as perguntas e responda tudo no seu caderno 1. Resposta:

a) Was.

b) Were.

c) Was.

d) Were.

e) Was.

f) Jane believes they WERE sleeping when it happened. (Existe um traço antes da palavra "believes", porém não faz sentido na frase colocar o verb to be naquela posição.

2.

b) You weren`t tired. / Were you tired?

c) Daniel was not hungry. / Was Daniel hungry?

d) Jack and Bob were not good friends. / Were Jack and Bob good friends?

e) Mary wasn`t very happy. / Was Mary very happy?

f) Ryan wasn`t so cool. / Was Ryan so cool?

g) John was not at Jack`s house. / Was John at Jack`s house?

h) Vinic and Marcus weren`t sick two weeks ago. / Were Vinic and Marcus sick two weeks ago?

Explicação:

1. Nos pronomes: We/You/They - se usa o verb to be no passado: WERE

Já nos pronomes: I/He/She/It - se usa o verb to be no passado: WAS.

Se atente para os nomes também: John - masculino. Jane - feminino.

2. É muito simples aqui. Sempre numa frase no Simples Past (Pronome + Verb to be no passado + Verbo no passado), ao passar para o negativo, você acrescenta apenas o "not" após o verb to be. Já para passar para o interrogativo, você APENAS deve colocar o Verbo to be na frente da frase, copiando as demais palavras após ele.

OBS: Was not é a mesma coisa que Wasn`t.

Assim como Were not é a mesma coisa que Weren`t.

Você apenas pode abreviar as palavras para facilitar.
