O Past Progressive é como o gerúndio no português e indica ações que aconteceram de maneira contínua no passado e pode ser usado em frases junto com simple past (que é o passado 'comum') para indicar duas ações que aconteceram ao mesmo tempo, como o exemplo da letra a) ("He meets a lot of friendly people while He was working in California") que diz que 'ele' conheceu amigos enquanto trabalhava na Califórnia (duas ações simultâneas).
