Some American tourists were spending a few days in Rio. Some of them understood Spanish, but very few were missing Portuguese. George, a young native language student at Columbia University, prided himself on his knowledge of Portuguese and decided to go to the restaurant alone.
It was George's first visit to Brazil and he was eager to practice his Portuguese with the "Cariocas". It was almost lunch time George was hungry. He did not have enough Brazilian money to pay for a meal, but he had his credit card. He left the hotel and walked a few minutes until he found a small place to eat. The restaurant looked ok but it was packed and did not have enough tables for everyone so it had to wait a bit. Finally he found a free table near the kitchen.
He was going to order an English menu but then realized that it was an excellent opportunity to test his knowledge of the local language. He looked at the menu. There were many dishes with complicated names, but George had no difficulty finding the name of that famous "feijoada" Brazilian He did not eat much (there was a lot of salt in the beans) and after finishing the meal decided to practice his Portuguese. He picked up a small dictionary in his pocket and looked at the word "how." Of course he found "how" then he looked "very".
"That's very easy," he thought. I can not understand why so many Americans find Portuguese difficult. The waiter was near him, so George finished for him and asked him with a smile, "como muito? "
