FERNANDO PESSOA A Short Biography Fermando Pessoa, one of the greatest ever Portuguese poets, was born in Lisbon in 1888. When he was eight years old, his mother and his steptather moved to South fnca, where they stayed untl he was seventeen. Dunng these years he became duent in English and developed an early love tor English-language authors Such as wilham shakespeare and john Mllton. He wTote his first poems and most of his prose in Engish. He returned to Lisbon in 1905 and lived there until he died in 1935. Fernando Pessoa became especially known for his use of heteronyms (Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Alvaro de Campos), a poetical technique in whicha person writes under different names.
