Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, son of Francisco José de Assis and Maria Leopoldina Machado de Assis, was born on June 21, 1849, in the Rio de Janeiro city. He was chronicler, short story writer, playwright, journalist, poet, novelist, critic and essayist. He studied in public school and even without having access to regular courses, he battled for learning. When he was 16 years he published his first literary work, the poem "Ela". At the age of 17, he got a job and began writing during his free time. Time after time he published romantic works. Machado de Assis became the greatest writer in the country and a master of the language.
