ONE MOMENT CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

For most children, accidents will mean nothing more than the scrapes and bruises that are part of playing, exploring and growing up. But for some children and young people – and their families – accidents will have far – reaching consequences.

Over the next 12 months, almost 400 children and young people will be killed in accidents. This compares to perhaps 60 deaths from family abuse and neglect, 20 killings by strangers and 115 deaths from meningitis. One in four of all deaths of 10 to 14 years-olds will be from accidents.

Accidents will also put over 120.000 children and young people in hospital. For most, broken bones will quickly heal.

However some children – who have suffered severe burns or scalds – will require years of painful skin grafts and may still be scarred for life.

Others – who have suffered head injuries – may be left with a permanent disability.

Yet others will experience flashbacks, nightmares or feelings of sadness, guilt or fear following the trauma of accidental injury.

Children from the poorest families are at greatest risk – they are more likely to be killed, admitted to hospital, and admitted with more severe injuries than children from better-off homes.

Yet the tragedy is that many of these deaths and injuries are preventable.

That’s why we hope you will join us in highlighting the sometimes life-long consequences of accidental injury for children and their families, and the practical steps we can take to prevent such accidents occurring.

Accidents happen in seconds but the effects can last a lifetime. Take action now for child safety.
