tThe math test was approaching and Mafalda and her friends went to study at the library. They began by recalling Pythagoras's theorem - relationship between sides a, b and c of a right triangle.

By definition, the hypotenuse is the opposite side to the right angle, and the collared sides are the two sides that form it. The previous statement relates lengths, but the theorem can also be stated as a relationship between areas:

“In any rectangle triangle, the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares whose sides are the collars.”

For both statements, one can equate:

c {}^{2}  = b {}^{2}  + a {}^{2}

where c represents the length of the hypotenuse, and a and b represent the lengths of the other two sides.

Pythagoras' theorem bears the name of the mathematical Pythagoras stream (570 BC - 495 BC), which is traditionally credited for its discovery and demonstration, although it is often argued that knowledge of the theorem predates it (there is much evidence that Babylonian mathematicians knew algorithms for calculating sides in specific cases, but it is not known whether they knew a algorithm as general as Pythagorean theorem).
