A regra geral para uso é a seguinte:

• A é utilizado para palavras que iniciam com consoante, ou som de consoante;

• AN é utilizado para palavras que iniciam com vogal, ou som de vogal

Importante lembrar que na língua inglesa o som pode diferir da escrita em algumas palavras, como nos exemplos a seguir:
