There would be a dance at the palace on the following day. The girl told the student she would dance
with him if he brought her a red rose. But it was winter and there was no red rose in the fields.
A little bird called a Nightingale heard the student's weeping for a red rose. She pitied the boy, who
suffered what she sang about: love. She decided to give a red rose to the student at the cost of her life. She
would sing all night long with her heart pressed against a Rose-tree's thorn until her life-blood flowed into the
Rose-tree so that a rose became red.
On the following day the student found a red rose as he opened the window. Then he got the rose and ran
to the girl's house. When he gave the girl the red rose she said she would not dance with him because she had
been sent some jewels. She told him it was widely known that jewels cost far more than flowers.
"What a silly thing love is”, said the student as he walked away. "In these difficult times one must learn
useful things." So he returned to his room, got a huge dusty book, and began to read.

“Que bobagem é o amor”, disse o aluno enquanto se afastava. “Nestes tempos difíceis é preciso aprender
coisas úteis. ”Então ele voltou para seu quarto, pegou um enorme livro empoeirado e começou a ler.
