The World Health Organization Ministerial
Conference on Young people and Alcohol in
Stockholm last week revealed some disturbing
facts:
• 55,000 Young Europeans who died from
alcohol-related causes in 1999. One in four
deaths of European men aged 15 – 29 is
related to alcohol.
• $195 million: The estimated annual social
costs of alcohol consumption in the E.U. 70%
of the total represents earnings lost through
heavy drinking.
• 38%: Proportion of Welsh 13-year-old boys who
claim to have been drunk twice or more. Only
6% of Swiss boys of that age make the same
claim. The habit of drinking among Welsh boys
is heavier than among Swiss boys at the age of
13.
• 35%: Percentage of Danish 15-and-16-year-olds
who say they have been drunk at least 20 times.
In Norway about 16% of adolescents say the
same.
• 20%: Of 11-year-old Greek boys who say they
drink beer, wine or spirits at least once a week.
On Greenland only one in 100 boys and girls of
the same age drink regularly.
• 2%: proportion of Czech 15-year-old boys who
have never touched alcohol. In Israel around
22% of boys and 38% of girls of the same age
have abstained from drinking.
• 16%: Reduction in general alcohol consumption
in countries that ban advertisements for spirits.
