The “Vienna Congress” was known as the summit of ambassadors from different countries in Europe, which had its opening session on 1 November 1814 and took place in the capital of Austria until June of the following year.
Its main objective was to define a new European political balance, after the surrender of Napoleon and the end of a long period of wars and tension in Europe that followed the French Revolution.
The main actors of the Congress were, of course, the great winning powers that formed the so-called Sixth Coalition, that is, Great Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia, but practically all European states sent a delegation to Vienna to accompany the process. The Portuguese representation was chaired by Pedro de Sousa Holstein, future Duke of Palmela. The work took place at the formal level, with official meetings and receptions between diplomats, but also at an informal level, in the corridors, dance halls and banquets.
