The Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan left Spain in 1519. He had five ships and 270 men. He travelled west, America and then to Asia. The ships were small. They were only 20 or 30 meters long!

Three months later, they arrived at South America. They started to travel south. It was very cold. While they were traveling, they saw some strange birds. “What are these birds?” They asked. “They can swim well, but they can’t fly!”

The journey was difficult. They had maps, but the maps weren’t very good. One ship sank. The men were cold and unhappy, and one ship returned to Spain. Finally, Magellan found a way through South America and they came to a big calm sea. “This sea doesn’t have a name. I will name it the Pacific Ocean,” said Magellan.

It was a long journey across the Pacific Ocean. There wasn’t much food, and the men were hungry. Four months later they arrived at a beautiful island in Asia and everyone was happy.

But when they were on the island, there was a terrible battle. Magellan and some other men died. They lost two more ships, too.

Now there was only one ship, The Victoria. A Spanish sailor, Juan Elcano, was the Captain. They traveled west and came to Africa. Many men on the Victoria died because they didn’t have much food and water.

In 1522, after three years, the Victoria finally returned to Spain. There were only 18 men on the ship. They were tired, hungry, and ill. But they were happy to be home!
