The Greeks liked sports and games very much. They dedicated many festival to their gods.
The festivals always included theater and games. There was a festival on the plain of Olympia
called the Olympic Games. These games officially started in 776 B.C. and attracted athletes from
all regions of Grece. The Olympic Games celebrated the “peace of gods” and there were no wars
during the days of the Games. In 394 A.D. Greece was a Roman colony and the Roman emperor
Theodosius ended the tradition of the Games.
In 1894, a Frenchman, the Baron of Coubertin, revived the Olympic Games. He organized the
International Olympic Committee to coordinate the modern Olympic Games. They included all
nations, with no distinction of religion, race or political ideas.
The first modern Olympic Games occured in Athens, Greece, in 1896
