Multinationals have a mixed reputation. On one hand, they provide investment and employment around the world, which is especially important in poorer countries. On the other hand, they exploit and sometimes maintain low costs and wages in those countries. And they often destroy or absorb smaller, weaker national competition. Most countries continue to welcome multinationals, but most now apply restrictions on how they operate.
Multinationals buy and sell in many countries, so they are almost always very large. In certain commercial activities, for example, automobiles or pharmaceuticals, the cost of research and product development is enormous. There is probably no alternative to large multinational corporations in those areas. But the future doesn ́t have to be entirely multinational. Some activities can be national or local. It depends on the quality and efficiency of them.
