Text - Building For Braille

Shubham Banerjee, 13, used a Lego robotics kit to build a low-cost Braille printer MARCH 22, 2015

One day Shubham Banerjee, 13, saw a flyer in his hometown of San Jose, California. The flyer was asking for donations for people who are blind or visually impaired. Shubham suddenly found himself wondering how the visually impaired read. When he asked his parents, they told him to Google it. Shubham did just that. Through his research, he found out that people who are visually impaired use a tactile writing system called Braille. He also discovered that Braille printers cost more than $2,000— too expensive for most blind readers, especially in developing countries. Shubham decided he wanted to do something to help. For his school’s science fair, Shubham used his Lego Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit and parts from a hardware store to create a low-cost braille printer. His design cut down the price of a printer from more than $2,000 to about $350. Shubham’s project earned him an invitation to the White House Maker Faire. Last year, the large technology company, Intel Corp., announced a deal to fund his work. Here are parts of an interview with Shubham to find out more about him and his invention.

INTERVIEWER: Why was this project important to you?

SHUBHAM BANERJEE: There are two million people in the world who are visually impaired and 90% of those people are living in developing countries. I didn’t think they had enough money to buy Braille printers. Some can go as high as $80,000! I wanted to reduce the cost and I did by 82%.

INTERVIEWER: Could you talk about your company, Braigo Labs?

BANERJEE: The name combines the words “Braille” and “Lego.” Braigo Labs is basically a company that takes this project forward. It helps people in need. It creates a new and more effective way of creating a Braille printer.

INTERVIEWER: How did it feel to have Intel invest in your idea?

BANERJEE: I was really happy that they funded me. I never thought such a big company would have that trust in me. It’s amazing.

INTERVIEWER: What do you intend to do with Intel’s money?

BANERJEE: With Intel’s money, I’m putting the company forward and working on the design and the real functioning product. The money will be used to hire professional engineers to build printers.

INTERVIEWER: What do you want to be when you grow up?

BANERJEE: I want to do something with science or engineering.

INTERVIEWER: What advice do you have for kids?

BANERJEE: When you have a science fair project, don’t do something someone has done before. Be original!
