Sufixos(suffixes) são uma espécie de afixos(affixes), pequenas unidades de palavras - os chamados morfemas - que são adicionadas a palavra base originando novas palavras. Quando colocados no final da palavra são chamados de sufixos.

Para que tal mecanismo seja compreendido, é necessário que se saiba alguns detalhes dos sufixos.

Sobre os sufixos:

• Há dois tipos deles em inglês os "Inflectional suffixes"(sufixos flexionais) e os "Derivational Suffixes"(sufixos derivacionais).
• Os "Inflexional suffixes", não alteram  significado da palavra original. No entanto, alteram sua função gramatical - como número do substantivo (plural ou singular) e tempo verbal.
• Os "derivational suffixes" mudam a palavra original, dando a ela novo significado. No entanto, sendo,  derivadas da palavra original.
