Stephen Hawking is an English physicist famous for his research into the origin of the universe. He has been a professor of Physics at Cambridge University since 1977. For more than 20 years, he has
done a lot of scientific research and he has influenced the development of big bang and the black hole theories. Hawking is also an extraordinary public figure: since the 1960s, he has suffered from
ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, an incurable nervous disease which has forced him to move around in a wheelchair. Since 1985, he hasn't been able to speak and he has used voice synthesizer on
a computer. In spite of the limitations imposed by his terrible disease, he has never stopped working. Hawking has shown great courage in fighting adversity and he has given us an example of
tremendous power of the human spirit.
