Some gardeners don't need watches at work. They just look at their flowers. Telling time by the flowers dates to the 1700s. Scientists of that time already knew that certain kinds of flowers opened and closed at definite times of the day. This fascinated Swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus. He studied the schedules of flowers around him. Then he figured out how a gardener could plant a flower bed that would keep time all day long. Linnaeus made a list of flowers that would open or close at certain times of the day. He chose local flowers that would "perform" on time, even on cloudy or cold days. Years later, an artist drew his version of Linnaeus' idea as a clock face. Each of the 12 daylight hours shows a kind of flower that opens or closes at that time of day.
