Since the Portuguese came to seek their fortune in 1500, Brazil, with its vast terrain and

abundant natural resources, has been seen by many as a land of opportunity. In the 19th and early

20th centuries, hundreds of thousands of migrants from Europe and Japan came to Brazil, hoping

that they could earn a living from agriculture. The, in the 1950’s, many workers came from the

Middle East to take up work in Brazil’s growing industrial sector.

Now, in the early 21th century, Brazil is once again proving irresistible to foreign workers. Its

booming economy is creating job vacancies in many sectors. For example, oil and gas exploration

have grown rapidly. As host of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, Brazil

has had to invest heavily in its infrastructure. The country’s mining industry is also thriving, due to a

strong trading partnership with China.

Meanwhile, the worldwide economy slump, in the US in particular, has contributed to Brazil’s

popularity with foreign workers. The US economy grew by a mere 2.9% in 2010, compared with

Brazil’s impressive growth rate of 7.5% that year. The current US unemployment rate is 9.1%, but in

Brazil, 57% of employers say there aren’t enough workers to fill vacancies. This might account for the

thousands of Americans who have moved to Brazil in search of work.

It isn’t always easy to move abroad for work. Newcomers must be hard-working, reliable, and

adaptable in order to secure lasting employment. For many, learning a new language and customs

must be challenging too. Anyone planning a new life in Brazil should think these things over carefully.

They must not forget that they will be far from home and won’t be able to see their family or friends

very often.
