 Simple Past (Passado Simples)

O Simple Past refere-se a eventos completos no passado que ocorreram em um tempo determinado.
Verbos regulares
As regras da formação dos verbos regulares no passado são apresentadas a seguir:
1. A maioria do verbos regulares têm o acréscimo de -ed:
work: worked visit: visited
2. Os verbos terminados em -e têm o acréscimo do -d:
continue: continued live: lived
3. Os verbos terminados em consoante + y têm a supressão do -y e o acréscimo do -ied:
study: studied cry: cried
4. Quando os verbos terminam em vogal + y, acrescenta-se somente o -ed:
play: played enjoy: enjoyed
Verbos irregulares
Os verbos irregulares no passado não têm uma regra específica:
go: went write: wrote read: read
As regras sintáticas das formas afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa são apresentadas a seguir.
Afirmativa

She played basketball yesterday.
He went to school yesterday.
Observação: o verbo principal encontra-se na forma do passado.
Negativa

She didn't play basketball yesterday.
He didn't go to school yesterday.

Observação 1: O didn't é a forma contracta de did not.
Observação 2: O verbo principal encontra-se na forma básica.
Interrogativa

Did she play basketball yesterday?
Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.
Did he go to school yesterday?
Yes, he did. / No, he didn't.
Observação 1: O Did é o verbo auxiliar usado nas perguntas no passado.
Observação 2: O verbo principal encontra-se na forma básica.
